                                                      Welcoming Our Military Personnel/Veterans

A Message for Our Warriors and Their Families

Military personnel and veterans from previous wars are in need of being embraced as returning warriors. Many of us were never officially welcomed home. Our military families are in need of support loved ones are changed forever from their experiences. Communities are impacted as well. We can support returning military personnel by; acknowledging our presence and creating supportive services not necessarily done by the VA.

Whether we signed up for college money, to make it a life career, to support our families and help our economic status, or signed up after 911 to offer up our lives to protect this country. We were there, and we have served dutifully with our lives, our bodies and our hearts to protect this country. We did the unthinkable and lived the unimaginable. We worked the unreasonable and watched our lives change before us without giving it a second thought. In fact, it was easier not to think.

Our Nation is ill-prepared to provide space for a warrior's return home to heal and adjust to civilian life. The suicide of 20+ veterans a day tell us this. Thanking us for our service is not enough.

Whether we believed that this service was honorable, patriotic, standing for this country and the flag. Still others may have a different reality from this experience. Our eyes see the truth of death and destruction implanted in our minds, seared in our hearts, the pain of the participation in war, unsure of the real reason for it all. Your reasons for serving are personal and Turtle Women Rising honors your service.

Turtle Women Rising understands the walk of our military personnel and our Veterans. As Indigenous people we have always honored our Warriors. We extend our hearts and hands to you to be a Warrior for your family, your community and your future generations.

We invite you to continue the way of Indigenous warrior ways by protecting and providing for the Women, Children and the Elderly. We ask that you only do what is necessary. Know your enemy. Protect the innocent and keep your integrity. Protect this land and the people here on our homelands.

Let us come together facing the unknown of our Warriors' wounds⎯the visible and invisible, the external and internal. Let us come together to create community and communicate. Join as relatives on this journey of embracing our returning Warriors. What can you do at  your homeplace to support?
